The Rock Bolt Support in Zhongnanshan Road Tunnel

Zhongnanshan Road Tunnel is the controlling project of highway from Baotou to Maoming and the main component of highway from Xi’an to Ankang.

Zhongnanshan Road Tunnel began to construct in April, 2002 and opened to traffic on January 20, 2007. During the construction, fault, water bursting, rock burst were constantly conquered and ventilation, fire, monitoring system were constantly perfected. It has reached a new level of tunnel constructing technology in China.

The single tunnel is about 18.02-kilometer long and totally 36.04 kilometers. Tunnel was constructed according to the standard of two-lane highway, it is 10.5-meter wide and 5-meter high. The designed speed is 80 kilometers per hour. Total investment is 3,193 billion yuan.

Up to now, the natural chasm of Qingling Mountain has changed to the thoroughfare and the mileage from Xi’an to Zhashui has shortened 60 kilometers, time shortened from 3 hours to 40 minutes.

Qinling is a mountainous region, with thick woods and few inhabitants. The terrain of Qingling Mountain is complex, rock stratum is alternated between soft and hard. The main rock stratum is gneiss and granite. There are dozens of fault, which can easily bring deformation, collapse and gushed water.

To solve a series of problems, several meetings were held. Ventilation, electric and mechanical control, disaster prevention, rock bolt support, passageway design and so on were efficiently discussed.

Among these designs, rock bolt support is the foundation. It has efficient effect for rock deformation and collapse. It can combine drilling, anchoring and grouting together, so it is high-efficient, time-saving and good-safety.

After the construction of Zhongnanshan Road Tunnel, it has great advantages for the traffic condition of south shaanxi area and the development of western regions in China.
